N.C. Stevens developed an interest in the material culture of beverages after living on the East Coast of Madagascar with the Betsimisaraka people, who ferment and drink an artisanal bark-hopped sugarcane wine called betsabetsa. When he returned home to Massachusetts, he fell into the legally ambiguous hobby of home distilling with his oldest brother. He has left his brandy to age in his parents' basement and is now couchsurfing around the world and independently documenting unique and local drinking cultures at DrinkingFolk.com.
