I’ve known Max and Sash for more than a decade. Since they started dating in college, well before I met them in Chicago, they’ve always been, simply, “Max and Sash.”

Max and Sash throw great parties—from their timely “Jersey Shore” soirée to their lovely wedding to their recent 10th anniversary. The drink selection has matured as the years have fallen away, but Max and Sash are always extremely generous with their refreshments.

Their parties feature the same, familiar, fun-loving crowd—Max and Sash’s friends from school and the friends they met in Chicago. For more than a decade, those two groups have exchanged brief pleasantries at these annual affairs, always retreating to their respective corners.

But this year was different, thanks to the tiki bar. Pleasantries evolved into small talk. Small talk into interesting new alliances. It always surprises me, the power that a custom cocktail can wield. As it turns out, it’s a power that’s as reliable as a decade-old friendship.
