These are the words, images, and beers that inspired the GBH Collective this week. Drinking alone just got better, because now you're drinking with all of us.
READ.// “Mothering and sex work are two of the hardest jobs that a woman can do,” explains writer Melissa Petro in her essay, “Here's how working in the sex industry prepared me to be a wife and mother.” I’ve never been a sex worker, but I am a mom and can definitely relate to the never-ending hustle, emotional labor, chronic under-appreciation, and judgmental stigma that swirl around both occupations. Sex work is real work and this eye-opening article left me with an even greater respect for women dismantling archaic attitudes by claiming their own power.
LOOK.// I’ve always nurtured a fondness for Japanese culture and this book of photographs by Eiji Ohashi captivated me from the first glance. Vending machines are a well-known icon of Japanese life, providing convenience and a common link between the hubbub of cities and far-flung locales of the countryside. Finding beauty in the mundane is something I think we can all appreciate.
DRINK.// Green Cheek Beer Company’s Australian For Pale
My trip to Orange County, California was not prompted by beer; rather, it was necessitated by the slow creep of mortality my family is bracing for together. But after we were ushered from my grandfather’s room for him to rest, my father, sister, and I found ourselves in need of a pint and conversation. Nearby Green Cheek provided both—an unusual accomplishment for my beer-fledgling family. At home later, alone, can in hand, I reflected on what it means to celebrate life and mourn death. For now, I choose to celebrate.
READ.// "The eggs will get smashed on the floor is something I think about a lot regardless of this episode or of any episode of anything. And yet we all still start to make the waffles." I know I don't need to offer up yet another reason for you to read and subscribe to Welcome to Hell World, but here's one anyway.
LOOK.// Yeah, DaBaby's SNL appearance was fantastic, but did you see the video that inspired it? "Hip Hop Musical," indeed.
DRINK.// Creature Comforts Brewing Company's DaySpring
I recently spent a few days with a bunch of buddies at some yurts in a rainy Georgia state park. When you're spending that kind of time, this beer—a 5.3% ABV Grisette with just the right touch of Brettanomyces—is what you should drink for breakfast around a fire while the steaks are cooked.
READ.// "This situation would have been stressful enough without the exciting addition of being mesmerized by my hands. Had I ever really looked at my hands before? I mean, really looked at them..." A first date is fraught enough. But a first date when you're accidentally super high? Nightmare fuel.
LOOK.// Yvon Chouinard, founder of clothing company Patagonia, recently produced a documentary about fish hatcheries, threats to wild salmon populations, and how our tax dollars are complicit in some fairly dodgy science. Artifishal is a great starting place to understand these complicated issues, and the film's website offers practical suggestions for altering your own seafood-eating habits.
DRINK.// Dogfish Head Brewery’s SuperEIGHT
SuperEIGHT stops short of making any health claims, saying only that it's a Gose brewed with eight "super" ingredients (superfoods) including prickly pear cactus, various types of berries, kiwi juices, and toasted quinoa. The overall flavor is tart and fruity, like a cranberry, and if there are some vitamins or antioxidants hidden in there, hey—I'll take all the nutritional help I can get around the holidays.
